dc.description.abstract | This project focuses on applying Laser Shock Peening (LSP) to enhance the performance of Inconel 718 superalloy, commonly utilized in gas turbine engine blades operating under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions ranging from 900°C to 1200°C. Superalloys like Inconel 718 are specifically engineered to endure extreme environments, making them crucial for aerospace applications. LSP, a cutting-edge surface treatment method, is employed to induce beneficial microstructural alterations in the material. By subjecting the material to a high-power laser beam for a brief duration, plasma generation and shock wave propagation lead to plastic deformation, imparting compressive residual stress and refining grain structure. This process enhances the material's surface hardness and depth compared to traditional treatments, thereby improving its suitability for demanding operational conditions in gas turbine engines. This project involved applying the LSP process to Inconel 718, a superalloy commonly utilized in gas turbine engine blades operating under high pressures and temperatures ranging from approximately 900°C to 1200°C. Superalloys, including Inconel 718, are specifically designed to endure harsh conditions and are renowned for their heat resistance properties. | en_US |
