In the current era of digital world and embedded systems, a smart society is heavily reliant on cyber-security of the interconnected devices. Hardware security of the devices is integral to ensure comprehensive cyber-security. This paper presents a novel methodology to design optimal secure hardware intellectual property cores useful for consumer electronics systems used in smart cities. The proposed approach is based on the integration of fingerprint watermarking technique and evolutionary algorithmic framework. Experimental results of the proposed approach indicated enhanced security (in terms of standard probability of coincidence metric) than recent prior work, at minimal design cost and no register overhead. © 2024 IEEE.en_US
