Abstract: | Sustainable development is planned development that ensures the meeting of present demands without altering the availability for future generations. Sustainability is a term that necessarily includes future planning. At present, there are several challenges for professionals and policymakers, such as climate change and mitigation strategy, planned urbanization and industrial development. Sustainable management of water resources is one of the challenges that derive the highest attention from the scientific community and policymakers. This chapter covers the various aspects of sustainability of river water resources considering the challenges from different sectors and factors. The chapter also includes a case study of water resource management under climate change scenarios for a river basin in northeast India. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. All rights reserved. |
