Carbon sequestration refers to the process of removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it in carbon sinks (such as in soil, geological structures, ocean or plants). This chapter introduces the various sources of carbon and the ways to sequestrate carbon. It focuses mostly on soil carbon sequestration, on how to estimate and model it, and on various sustainable land and water management practices to promote carbon sequestration. Such practices include nutrient management, reducing tillage, reuse of water, cover crops, etc. These are win–win practices because apart from playing a role in reducing atmospheric CO2, they also improve soil quality and crop production. These practices, along with other carbon capture approaches and other initiatives, must be used in combination to achieve an efficient and sustainable mitigation plan against global warming. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
