This chapter presents a historical account of India's patent policy evolution. In view of the significant changes in policy over the last two hundred years, research and development investments and patents have grown over the recent period. We present some of the key characteristics of such investments in innovation and their outcomes in India. Some of these trends are typical for developing economies, for instance, low relative investment in research and uninspiring private sector performance in terms of these investments - with most patenting performed by non-residents. We also take stock of empirical research that focuses on the relationship among making provisions for patents, motivating innovation, and facilitating technology transfer. © Walter G. Park 2024.
