A converter, whether operating independently or connected to the grid and providing supplementary services, is referred to as a multifunctional converter (MFC). These converters possess the capability to offer reactive power compensation, facilitate fault ride-through, enhanced power quality, and meet the demanded reliability requirements. This paper explores various aspects of multifunctional control for islanded and grid connected converters. Through a systematic and extensive literature review, control strategies, ancillary services, emerging trends, standards, and grid codes related to multifunctional converters over the past decade are presented. A Venn diagram is used to present various control features of MFCs. The paper concludes with the possible future research avenues in the area of multifunctional converters. © 2013 IEEE.en_US
