This chapter introduces rechargeable battery technology in depth, with particular focus on sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The fundamental working principles and key components of SIBs are briefly discussed, with special emphasis on the role of electrode materials in determining battery performance. An in-depth literature review of the different cathode materials is given, with emphasis on the structural characteristics, merits, and demerits of these materials. Particular attention is given to major classes of cathode materials, including layered oxides, tunnel-structured structures, and polyanionic structures. Their electrochemical characteristics, structural stability, and applicability for sodium-ion storage are highlighted in the discussion. Based on existing literature, the key research challenges and gaps in the development of high-performance cathode materials are identified. Finally, the scope, objectives, and motivation of the present research work are outlined, followed by a brief description of the overall structure and organization of the thesis.en_US
