Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is a key enabling technology for 5G and beyond communication systems. However, devising matrix inversion-less symbol detection techniques for uplink massive MIMO systems is a major challenge for the practical feasibility of 5G and beyond communication systems. In this article, we propose an iterative symbol detection algorithm for near-optimal symbol detection in uplink massive MIMO systems with a large number of users. In the proposed algorithm, first, a low complexity initial solution is utilized to compute the residual error. Next, the estimated actual error is refined through an iterative line search method. Simulation results justify the viability of the proposed detection algorithm than several existing massive MIMO detection algorithms, in terms of bit error rate performance with comparable computational complexity. © 2019 IEEE.en_US
