Abstract: Luminescence properties due to defects in sol-gel prepared parent and Ga3+/Cr3+ co-doped ZnO are investigated. The difference of charge and ionic size creates defects in between the energy bands i.e. conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB). A hexagonal ZnO phase (Wurtzite) with a space group of P63mc is revealed in these samples using X-ray diffraction. A detailed study of native defects or trap states like oxygen vacancies, zinc interstitials, etc. present in undoped and Ga/Cr co-doped samples were investigated using photoluminescence study. Significant reduction in the visible spectrum i.e. deep level emission is revealed with the introduction of higher charges. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
