Abstract: In the present section, three kinds of tools for estimating fretting fatigue life and strength are introduced. The first one is the equations for estimating fretting fatigue strength, which include tangential force (coefficient), contact pressure, and relative slip amplitude as the parameters. However, they cannot well predict the wide range of specimen geometry. The second one is the fracture mechanics approach, in which the maximum tangential stress theory should be taken into consideration due to the mixed-mode crack growth under fretting fatigue condition and the crack closure behavior should be also taken into consideration. Many fracture mechanics approaches have been reported to give successful estimations. The third one is the TSR-CSR diagram proposed based on the tangential stress and compressive stress acting on the fretting contact surface. The fretting fatigue strengths and lives of a wide range of specimens and practical structures can be estimated based on this diagram. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
