Abstract: The route of drug delivery defines its mechanism, dosage concentration, efficiency, and its target organ. Despite several traditional routes of drug delivery available drug releasing, bio-implants is a promising alternative delivery method that aims to optimize the potency and acceptability of therapeutic compounds. Implantable drug delivery devices are an effective drug delivery method that lower the use of drug concentration and enhancing the patient compliance with minimal side-effects. Nano-bioimplants can act as a potential tool where traditional delivery methods are unsuitable. These nano implants avoid the first pass metabolism by allowing the direct absorption of drug in systemic circulation and thus increase the bioavailability and bioaccumulation of the drug. The life of the nano-implants depends on the manufacturing process and material. Selection of suitable material is necessary for prolonged and reliable service of the bio-implant. This chapter gives an overview of bio-nanoimplants, their classification, characterization and applications in various diseases. Further, we also discuss the challenges and future prospects of implantable drug delivery and contribution of nanotechnology to influence the properties of nano-bioimplant. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
