Abstract: | The discovery of stable divalent compounds of group 14 elements was a major breakthrough in the field of chemistry. Until 1970, these compounds were known to be transient species, or their divalent salts were considered as stable binary compounds 1 . However, in the same year, Lappert and his team synthesized dialkylgermylene [(Me3Si)2CH]2Ge, which was found to be stable at ambient temperature 2 . This was followed by the report of the first unsymmetrical dialkylgermylene [(SiMe3)CGeCH(SiMe3)2] by Newmann and his colleagues in 19912 . These discoveries ignited the research interest in divalent compounds of group 14 elements, and the last two decades have witnessed tremendous growth in the synthesis and reactivity of main group low-valent complexes. |
