Abstract: Laser has evolved as one of the most promising techniques to optimize the various attributes related to manufacturing such as low material wastage, less time requirement in comparison to traditional methods, etc. Hence, understanding the physics behind the laser–matter interaction may be helpful to improve the existing laser-based manufacturing techniques to yield better outcomes. Hence, this chapter deals with the governing mechanisms related to the laser–matter interaction and various phenomena such as energy transitions, excitation, population inversion, amplification, and oscillation. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Avinash Kumar, Ashwani Kumar, Abhishek Kumar
