Abstract: | High-entropy alloys (HEAs) or multicomponent solid solution alloys are novel metallic alloys in which four or more elements are presented with at least 5% to 35% of each. Welding and joining of HEAs are key areas that will majorly impact future developments in these alloys. The types and selection of various welding processes are crucial to understanding the feasibility, future research, and engineering applications of HEAs. The study presented in this chapter discusses the critical research work on welding and joining of face-centered cubic (FCC) HEAs in detail for dissimilar welding methods. The structural and mechanical properties of welding zones, such as the stir zone (SZ) or the fusion zone (FZ), along with the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of various welding processes, are discussed and compared with those of conventional alloys. Laser and GMAW of FCC HEAs showed a low value of mechanical strength as compared to friction stir welding. The higher values of joint strength and appreciable ductility in tensile tests are observed in friction stir welding. Understanding the structure–property relationship of welding and the joining of HEAs may pave the way for future technological applications. © 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC. |
