Abstract: | This chapter presents an overview of the key metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes, along with their principles, advantages, challenges, and applications. Metal-based AM technologies have emerged as revolutionary processes for the production of complex and customized metal components. The chapter emphasizes the crucial role of material selection, process parameters, and post-processing techniques in achieving the adequate mechanical properties and surface finish of additively manufactured metallic parts. It also discusses the growing significance of computational modeling and simulation in predicting and optimizing the complex thermal and mechanical behavior of the AM process. The industrial implications of metal AM across diverse sectors such as aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and energy are highlighted, underscoring its potential to reduce lead times, and enable innovative designs. Major challenges related to AM processes, such as residual stresses, porosity, and quality control, are also addressed along with the ongoing research endeavors focused on enhancing the reliability and performance of AM metallic components. In essence, this chapter provides a comprehensive foundation for researchers, industry persons, and students to grasp the intricacies of metal-based AM technologies, fostering a deeper understanding of their transformative impact on modern manufacturing paradigms. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Pawan Sharma and Vishvesh J.
