Abstract: Cancer is a broad term for the uncontrolled growth of cells. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a common type of cancer that affects myeloid cells which form blood in the body. In a CML patient, myeloid cells undergo a genetic mutation called translocation in which, a segment of the chromosome 9 detaches itself from its original sequence and attaches with a segment of chromosome 22 t form philadelphia chromosome. It contains two genes fused together to form a composite mutated gene called BCR-ABL gene. The BCR-ABL gene causes CML by producing tyrosine kinase enzyme which triggers an abnormal growth in the number of white blood cells and reduction in the number of red blood cells in the blood.
