Abstract: | Aluminum-Air Batteries (AABs) reckon substantial features including high specific energy, significant capacity, and high theoretical voltage, which are desirable and valuable alternatives for Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in various applications. However, due to slow reactions within the batteries, the durability and efficiency of AABs are compromised. As a result, these types of batteries have not yet been commercialized. These prominent issues can be resolved by utilizing a suitable oxygen catalyst on the air cathode side to enhance the durability and overall efficiency of AABs. This review thoroughly explores the utilization of various catalysts, including noble metal-based, carbonaceous material-based, transition metal-based, and polymer-based catalysts, as well as explores their respective impacts. The use of binder-free electrodes also significantly influences the overall performance of AABs. Therefore, in addition to discussing the reaction mechanism of batteries, this review article also briefly examines the effective strategy of using binder-free electrodes to enhance the performance and durability of AABs. © 2024 Elsevier B.V. |
