Abstract: Organic waste generation is a growing issue globally. According to estimates, the amount of organic waste generated globally is expected to reach 2.2 billion tons by 2025. Current alternatives for most treatment processes include composting, anaerobic digestion, and thermochemical processes, such as incineration, pyrolysis, or gasification. In recent years, the increasing demand for organic waste management solutions has led to a significant increase in research on rapid composting techniques and optimizing parameters that affect the composting process. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of rapid composting techniques and their optimization. The study further reviews various composting methods, such as windrow, vermicomposting, and in-vessel composting. The study also highlights the importance of optimizing parameters, such as temperature, moisture content, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and aeration to achieve the desired composting outcomes. This study summarizes the challenges and opportunities for future research in rapid composting and organic waste management. This review is valuable for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in developing sustainable and efficient waste management solutions. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
