Abstract: This chapter is an introduction to the perovskites, Glazer notations, types of ferroelectrics, structures of sodium bismuth titanate, phonon modes, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, thermodynamics of ferroelectric transitions, piezoelectric properties, the effect of poling, domain formations, thermal depolarization, polarons, and various conduction mechanisms. The different applications of sodium bismuth titanate-based materials are also discussed. Several pieces of literature associated with the structure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of A/B-site modified sodium bismuth titanate ceramics have been compiled and discussed. This section also contains the literature on the piezo-photocatalysis applications of NBT-based nanomaterials. The motivation and objectives of the thesis are elaborately explained.
