Cryo-rolling is a sophisticated rolling technique performed at very low temperatures (−110 to −230 °C) to improve the mechanical properties of low-temperature metals and alloys. Al 6061 sheets were treated with liquid nitrogen to achieve the desired temperature of −190 °C. The cryo-rolled samples were used to measure the metallurgical and mechanical properties. The samples were rolled with different reduction percentages namely 30, 50, and 70% under the presence of nitrogen and studied the effect of strain during cryo-rolling. The cryo-rolled samples of Al6061 showed better mechanical strength than samples rolled at room temperature. The stress–strain relations obtained from the experimentation were further used to extract the Johnson–Cook (J–C) plasticity model parameter for the cryo-rolled Al 6061. It was also found that the effect of strain hardening was more severe in the cryo-rolling method. Further, the fracture behavior of samples rolled in different conditions were also studied to understand the reason behind the change in mechanical properties. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.en_US
