dc.description.abstract | In recent years, both corrosion and wear have emerged as severe concerns in marine and offshore industries. The degradation of marine structures is more challenging in the ocean region, as serious corrosion attacks occur due to environmental factors such as seawater, humidity, and saline water. Corrosion and wear are the surface and subsurface phenomena that gradually affect the material integrity and lifespan. Corrosion is a chemical reaction phenomenon that deteriorates the material due to a reaction to environmental conditions, especially with the presence of oxygen. However, wear is defined as progressive damage to a solid surface by the action of relative motion and mechanical action with a contacting substance. Deposition of a protective layer in the form of coatings is one of the most effective strategies to protect against the corrosion and wear phenomena. In addition, these coatings play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of the components. The selection of feedstock material used for the deposition is a key factor in determining the effectiveness of coatings in corrosion and wear resistance. Further instance, ceramic coating provides better resistance against corrosion and wear, offering a reliable solution to these challenges. This chapter aims to provide fundamentals of corrosion and wear mechanisms. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Gaurav Prashar, Hitesh Vasudev, and Lalit Thakur | en_US |
