Abstract: In the present work, the focus has been given to the synthesis and study of zinc complexes in nitrogen rich ligand environment. A Schiff base ligand HL was synthesized which was used to synthesize three new zinc complexes [Zn(HL)(N3)2]•H2O, [Zn(HL)(5-phenyltetrazolato)2] and [Zn(HL){5-(4-pyridyl)-tetrazolato}2]. All the complexes are characterized through ESI-MS and IR spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis has been done for zinc-Schiff base complex [Zn(HL)(N3)2]•H2O. The Schiff base ligand and complex [Zn(HL)(N3)2]•H2O have also been characterized through NMR spectroscopy. Sensing properties of complex [Zn(HL)(N3)2]•H2O have been studied using fluorescence and it is found that the complex shows good anion sensing ability for different phosphates and primarily dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO4-) anion. The detection limit was found to be 243 nM. Recovery analysis was done for real-life water samples for determination of concentration of dihydrogen phosphate anion and the observed value was found to be in good agreement with the actual value.
