Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the performance of a cognitive amplify-and-forward multi-relay network (CAFMRN) with direct link under the joint impact of transceiver hardware impairments (HIs) and channel estimation errors (CEEs). Herein, we consider hardware distortions induced by all the non-ideal secondary nodes and residual interferences originating from imperfect channel estimations. Taking these imperfections into account, we derive a new closed-form expression for the outage probability of the considered CAFMRN employing selection cooperation over independent and non-identical Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, we derive an asymptotic outage behavior to assess achievable diversity order. We illustrate that HIs may invoke ceiling effects into the system, namely relay cooperation ceiling (RCC) and overall system ceiling (OSC). Specifically, we showcase that the RCC ceases the full cooperation, whereas, the OSC may further aggravate the system outage performance under a high-rate requirement. By modeling the CEEs as decreasing function of signal-to-noise-ratio, we demonstrate that CEEs pose critical impact on the coding gain only and not on the diversity gain of the system. Finally, numerical and simulation results are presented to validate our theoretical findings. © 2017 IEEE.
