Abstract: Fly ash (FA) or pulverized fuel ash, formed during the combustion of coal and earlier recognized as an industrial waste, has become an important industrial by-product. Extensive research has been conducted worldwide toward the waste management of FA, within and outside the construction industry. Over time, studies in FA have shifted from waste disposal to recycling to sustainable development through FA utilization. This chapter discusses the factors which have reoriented the motivation for FA utilization, along with new materials developed using FA. The chapter also covers important characteristics of FA and processing technologies for their improvement. © 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
