Abstract: | Seismology is a branch of science that delves into the study of seismic wave propagation and earthquakes to unravel the structure of the Earth and understand earthquake mechanics. A seismic wave is characterized by its ability to propagate through layers of the Earth, making it essential for understanding and mitigating natural hazards. In general, these waves can be divided into two categories: surface waves and body waves. While body waves travel through the Earth’s interior, surface waves travel along the surface of the Earth causing significant damage to structures near the surface during earthquakes. There are many applications of seismic surface wave propagation in solid media, including earth science, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, and bioengineering. Seismologists are interested in examining the dispersion curves of propagating waves to study seismic motion in di↵erent structures. Two major types of seismic surface waves exist, Love wave and Rayleigh wave, named after their founder, A.E.H. Love and Lord Rayleigh, respectively. Love wave is one type of seismic surface wave that propagates along the surface of a homogeneous isotropic layer over a half-space. Love-like waves are similar to Love waves except that they may propagate through a layered medium which is not homogeneous isotropic. For Love-like waves to exist in a layered media, the shear wave velocity of the layer must be smaller than the shear wave velocity of the half-space. Surface waves, including Love-like waves, play a pivotal role in seismic studies due to their sensitivity to geological variations. |
