Abstract: Pyroelectric materials are widely used in thermal detectors and sensors, besides their energy harvesting applications. Unlike photon-detection devices, pyroelectric thermal detectors offer several advantages, including simple manufacturing, low cost, high stability, and the absence of a cooling system or external bias. This chapter explores the practical applications of pyroelectric materials in temperature sensing, infrared (IR) detection, and thermal imaging. Three case studies on temperature sensors, UV/IR detectors, and thermal imaging are examined. The selection criteria for pyroelectric materials and the factors influencing sensor performance are evaluated. In addition, various devices and the impact of sensor design and construction on overall performance were analyzed. Finally, recommendations and prospects for pyroelectric sensors are discussed. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
