Abstract: The information regarding the source of vibration and noise is vital and depends on time-varying mesh stiffness of gear. The mesh stiffness can be estimated for the spur gear pair using both drive-side mesh stiffness and back-side mesh stiffness. Due to tight mesh or use of anti-backlash gears, gear back-side tooth contact takes place. Back-side mesh stiffness is calculated by the similar method as used for drive-side mesh stiffness. In this study, an analytical method is used for calculating the time-varying back-side mesh stiffness. The effect of addendum alteration and tip relief on back-side mesh stiffness is analyzed by knowing the association among mesh stiffness of drive-side and back-side of contacting gears. Also, the effect of gear’s center distance modification, tooth thickness change on the backlash is calculated. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
